This is an image of singer/songwriter Jehnny Beth, lead singer and lyricist for rock band Savages. The photo was shot in Hackney, using a narrow depth of field to draw the viewer into the front eye. On her music Jehnny says “artists are creating ‘the world exactly as it should be’. That is the real power of the artists, and I believe in this power.”
Sport 10 Year Anniversary
A big one for Sport for their tenth anniversary edition; we went out to Madrid to shoot Gareth Bale, who featured in the magazine ten years ago at the very start of his career. We shot him post-training at the club’s extensive facilities on the city’s edge. The magazine was running a double cover edition so it was then up to Sheffield to shoot Jessica Ennis-Hill who I have had the pleasure of photographing a few times before. To give the whole edition a celebratory vibe Serge Seidlitz then illustrated across the whole edition. Some behind the scenes images too of the days shot by Naomi Baker. As a sports portrait photographer it was great working with Gareth and Jessica.
Portugal
I recently headed over to Portugal to work on a travel feature. We started off in Porto in the North and then travelled all the way down to Lisbon and then onto the Algarve.
We explored all three destinations by motorcycle sidecar. Our local guide in Lisbon, Daniel Coelho, summed it up by saying “You can smell the engine, the salt in the air, the washing on the lines and the food on people’s dinner tables”. As a lifestyle photographer portugal was a visual treat.
Key highlights of the trip included visiting LX Factory Complex in Lisbon, which houses numerous great restaurants and bars all located in a huge former printing works.
Steinhoff International
I was tasked with photographing Managing Director Alan Williams, of Steinhoff International, for the inaugural edition of their in-house magazine. Steinhoff are currently undergoing some restructuring, to pull together all their affiliates under one umbrella. The magazine provides a good opportunity for Alan to introduce himself to readers in this time of change. As is often the case with senior figures, we only had a short amount of time to capture Alan so the test for me as a commercial photographer was to pre-light and pre-test everything in advance.
Sport Uncovered
Here are photos of ultra-runner Robbie Britton and golfer Carly Booth for my ongoing work with the Sport Uncovered series. I’m always looking at creative ways to showcase athletes in their ‘natural’ form. Carly’s extensive yoga training has helped her hone her technique for this incredible pose, whilst the use of space in Robbie’s shot symbolises the incredibly long distances he covers as a runner and the mental isolation he endures. As a sports portrait photographer its a privilege to work with athletes at the top of their game.
Fabulous Magazine
We shot a number of leading female athletes for Fabulous, in the run up to the Olympics. Smoke was used to add some GB drama. All post-production was handled in-house, shooting the subject and smoke separately for obvious health and safety reasons. Below is one of the finished images of Becky Downie, as well as a behind the scenes of the smoke shoot. As a sports portrait photographer its always so easy working with those who excel in their disciplines.
Anna Chancellor
Anna Chancellor on the cover of Saga Magazine. We shot Anna in an upstairs room at The Old Vic Theatre in London using gels to create a dreamy look and feel. As a portrait photographer actors are one of my favourite subjects.
Viktoria Modesta
Viktoria Modesta on the cover of German electronics giant Saturn’s print magazine. Modesta wears a prosthetic made by Sophie Oliveira Barata from the Alternative Limb Project. You can see Sophie giving a Ted Talk on the subject below: As a commercial photographer Viktoira is a wonderful subject to shoot.
Psychologies
Summer portraits shot on location in Streatham Common for Psychologies. We used the summer light and filled it in using a shoot through, giving a warm tone and positive feel. As a London based portrait photographer if was the first time I had shot in this location, it was great.
Robbie Williams
My image of Robbie Williams used by German Magazine Welt der Wunder. Robbie was shot in a blacked-out room at The Langham Hotel in Central London. The image was created using multiple gelled high speed flash pops….As a portrait photographer it was great to work with robbie.
Metropolitan Magazine
Shot for Metropolitan Magazine, here are a number of features commissioned for what is the Eurostar onboard magazine. A journalistic spin on First Dates (long before First Dates aired). Always shot in cramped restaurants in London and Paris, so adaptability and speed are key. As a portrait and lifestyle photographer its alway fun to find yourself in these random situations.
Sport Uncovered - Round Up
Here is a slideshow showcasing my ongoing project Sport Uncovered which is being shot for Sport Magazine. The aim is to show top British athletes in positions they would naturally adopt in their master sport, but also in the nude, in their ‘rawest form’. So far we have shot some of the leading names in their respective sports with new images being added every two weeks. As a sport portrait photographer I have found this whole series a delight to work on.
Dominic Cooper
Shot at W Hotel off Leicester Sq, these are some images recently used by The Times of actor Dominic Cooper. Cooper has worked in film, television, theatre and radio and is perhaps best known for his role in the film Mamma Mia and stage production The History Boys. As a portrait photographer I love working with actors as they are so used to collaboration.
Runner's World shoot
This shoot, a commission for Runner's World, showcased the 8 most improved amateur runners in the UK. We shot at White Rabbit Studio and managed the shoot from subject liaison to post production. The pictures were taken with a shallow depth of field to really draw the viewer in; all wearing Asics. Behind the scenes video from the shoot below. All the subjects were a dream to work with - as a sports portrait photographer you couldn’t wish for better subjects.
Brussels, Bucharest and Budapest
A recent commission that involved three location shoots in Brussels, Bucharest and Budapest. Exploring the rapidly expanding street truck food scene. Food trucks are rapidly challenging more traditional restaurants and are fast becoming the logical step for young chefs wanting autonomy and creative control. As we were shooting out of season for the coming summer months a huge thanks to all those who willingly took part. Trying to capture summer images in the depths of winter is always a challenge but with the right lighting and logistics something that can be achieved. Whilst the trucks themselves were wonderful it was the people I really enjoyed shooting - producing a lovely set of lifestyle images.
Surfacing - Personal Project
A recent personal project entitled Surfacing. All the models were shot wearing delicate Peter Pan Collars to tie the shoot together. The dark tear was added at the last moment using a acrylic makeup product and allowed to flow. As an advertising photographer its alway good to shoot your own thing.
Savages
The latest cover of US music magazine Magnet, featuring band of the moment Savages we were invited to shoot them for their second studio album ‘Adore Life’. As a portrait photographer I love shooting musicians, especially ones with such a clear vision.
James Haskell for Forever Sports
Another shoot with England international James Haskell. Shot at White Rabbit the cover and extensive feature spread focused on James' fitness regime and training program. We shot low key images with raking side light to show off James physique. As a sport portrait photographer I have worked with James a fair few times now and he always a pleasure to shoot.
Ella Woodward for You Magazine
A recent cover shoot for You Magazine with leading health food blogger Ella Woodward aka Deliciously Ella. Shot at The Worx in West London. Her blog receives 6 million hits a month and she has 400,000 followers on Instagram. The main reason for Deliciously Ella’s success is Woodward’s own story: she suffered frompostural tachycardia syndrome, which can cause debilitating dizziness and blurred vision. She was laid up in bed for almost a year and says her change in diet – along with exercise – has been key to her recovery. Ella was great to shoot - as a lifestyle photographer you couldn’t ask for more from a subject.
Traveller
The latest cover of Easyjet Traveller shot Cell Studios with the lovely Ben Hudson from Rage Models. Juliana Sergot expertly providing the OTT sun tan. We original shot with a wider crop in mind but they were bold and cropped hard. A fun and humorous image to brighten a dull January. As a portrait photographer is always good to have a little fun with images.
